Derik J. Sven

Derik's journey in dentistry began early, influenced by his parents' careers in the dental laboratory industry. Following in their footsteps, he became a laboratory technician and earned board certification (CDT), specializing in Crown and Bridge. He transitioned to clinical dentistry, motivated by a desire for more direct patient interaction. Derik completed undergraduate degrees in Dental Hygiene and Health Care Administration at Pima Medical Institute in Seattle, where he served as class president and graduated with honors. He has balanced full-time clinical practice with administrative and consulting roles throughout his career.

While Derik jokes about collecting degrees as a hobby, his academic achievements demonstrate a deep commitment to understanding the fields intersecting with dentistry: public health, business, and law.

Moving to the East Coast for graduate studies, he earned a Master’s in Public Health and a Master’s in Business Administration. This dual education provided a practical foundation for balancing health initiatives with business priorities.

Recognizing the critical role of advanced academics in advocacy and policy, Derik has pursued his doctoral studies at George Washington University in DC. His research focuses on developing sensible, research-based initiatives to reform dentistry and the dental education system in the United States.

Derik’s involvement with the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) has been essential to his growth in the field. Since beginning his career in Washington State, he has been active in the Association and, in 2023, was honored to be inducted into the inaugural class of ADHA Fellows. He serves as the President-Elect for Virginia's Dental Hygienists' Association.

Derik is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health, the American Public Health Association, the Dental Speaker Institute, and the National Association of Dental Laboratories, connecting with professionals who share his commitment to advancing oral health.
